Craft and Film

On Friday night Etsy Labs celebrated their second birthday with a well-crafted party in their DUMBO digs.  Tina, whose talents have made her famous on Craft Zine more than once, invited me to their paper night a while back. I was bummed to not go that night, since I’m planning to do more books with the paper I find and hoard. Lucky me that she didn’t stop the invitations coming!

At the Etsy bday party, we had a fun time making paper hats and playing with the toys that fell out of the piñata, and learned that we both hate loud party noises like balloons popping, or the thought of actually striking a piñata.  Yet we both love the darkness of children’s stories and fairy tales. The atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming. Everyone had a genuine smile and the pizza and pop (tina says ‘pop’ teehee) were free. We made some friends, like Caitlin, who makes purses out of old hardback books.  Her operation is called “Rebound Designs”. A very clever gal, she’s from D.C. and will be at the ALA conference in D.C. this coming week.

I love Caitlin’s Rebound idea, similar to making purses out of old cigar boxes, which lets you enjoy your favorite old book even after the pages have fallen out. She has lots on her site, but she’ll make a purse out of a pre-loved book you’d like to provide as well. I have a modest collection of old books, and I know if they started to fall apart more this would be a reincarnation worthy their goodness.

Lots of people came from out of town, and many participated via the chatroom and webcam they had set up.

I’m more excited about Etsy than ever, either to bring my bag of “materials” to make grateful use of their sewing machines, or to get my paper craft on. The exotic lands of metal work and screen printing may tempt me, but I’d do my best to stay on task.

As if I was on a talent-seeking bender, yesterday I spent a big part of the day with Charles and friends who were sharing their performance and production skills to make a short for the 48-hour film project. I was generously allowed to be part of the “talent” and “act” a bit. I’m really excited to see the finished product, since the story, script, acting (non-mine) and even dancing were all high-caliber. There will be a screening of our entry on Wednesday night at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema. I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it, so I will stop now with the reassurance that it will one day be on YouTube.

Can i get a woot woot?

I’m very sleepy now. After the filming I headed up to Astoria to hang with Susan, Nancy and Alicia for a slumber partay.  I had no idea how much I needed until this delicious experience until I walked into a room of women lounging on a large couch with wine, potato chips and veggie dip. We talked about purses, boys, and other mysteries of desire. I brought my 4-pack of Frida Kahlo temporary tattoos, but they were not required. Some other time, I bet.
